Exam boards: Edexcel, AQA, OCR Following the huge success of A Student's Guide to Harmony and Counterpoint, Hugh Benham's latest book provides an in-depth study of the harmony requirements for Edexcel AS Music plus longer examples of four-part writing for AQA and OCR AS Music. Students will revise the basics of keys, intervals, triads and 7th chords. Guidance is given on how chords are strung together to make musical sense and how to deal with part-writing and non-chord notes. They will be introduced to counterpoint, how to analyse harmonies written by somebody else and how to complete a single phrase in four-part harmony. Each chapter includes activities to help students understand the topics and prepare for the exams. Hugh Benham read Music and Engleza at Southampton University, where he was awarded a Ph.D. for his study of the music of John Taverner. He is a chair of examiners for GCE Music, an in-service trainer, church organist, and writer, and formerly taught music in a sixth-form college. Hugh has contributed to Music Teacher and Classroom Music magazines, and is the author of Baroque Music in Focus (Rhinegold, 2007). His other writing includes two books on Engleza church music, including John Taverner: his Life and Music (Ashgate, 2003), articles on early music, contributions to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2001) and Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, and a complete edition of Taverner for Early Engleza Church Music.
